We ran every casino welcome offer we list through the same formula, friend, and not one came out ahead. Sports bonuses are different, and the difference is worth understanding before you claim one. A low sportsbook rollover on straight bets can leave you with real expected value. The same bonus, cleared with parlays, costs you more than it gives. The bet type decides the real sports betting bonus value: money or a trap.
Last updated: 25 September 2026. Bovada’s terms were checked on Bovada’s own promotions pages on that date. MyBookie’s rollover rule comes from MyBookie’s site and its offer from our review. Offers we could not verify are left out rather than estimated. See which ones and why.
The Short Answer
Cleared with single bets at standard -110 odds, Bovada’s crypto sports welcome is worth about $333 of its $750 face value, Bovada’s standard sports welcome about $71 of $250, and MyBookie’s $1,000 welcome about $91. Clear the same three bonuses with three-leg parlays and every one of them turns negative, by as much as −$1,605 at MyBookie. Those are expected values for a bettor with no edge, not promises. But the direction is not in doubt: the bet type you clear it with decides the outcome.
The Formula
It’s the same formula our bonus calculator uses, with the sportsbook’s margin in place of a slot’s house edge:
- Expected cost = amount you must bet × the book’s margin.
- Net value = bonus − expected cost.
On a standard two-way line at -110 on both sides, you risk $110 to win $100. If you have no edge, you lose on average 4.55% of everything you stake. That’s the margin we use throughout. It’s lower at reduced-juice prices (about 3.7% at -108 and 2.4% at -105) and higher on props and longshots. Our guide to reading betting odds explains where the number comes from.
Why sports can beat casino here: a 5x or 10x rollover at a 4.55% margin costs less than the bonus it releases. A 25x–40x casino rollover at a similar edge costs as much as the bonus or more. That’s the whole story, and the numbers below are just that arithmetic applied.
Sports Betting Bonus Value, Verified Offer by Offer
| Offer | Terms | You must bet | Net value, singles at -110 | Net value, 3-leg parlays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bovada crypto sports welcome | 75% up to $750 on a $1,000 deposit; 5x deposit + bonus | $8,750 in credited action | +$333 | −$390 |
| Bovada sports welcome | 50% up to $250 on a $500 deposit; 5x deposit + bonus | $3,750 in credited action | +$71 | −$238 |
| MyBookie sports welcome | 100% up to $1,000; 10x deposit + bonus | $20,000 | +$91 | −$1,605 |
Each row assumes you take the full bonus. Smaller deposits scale in proportion: on $100, Bovada’s crypto offer nets about +$33, its standard offer about +$14 and MyBookie’s about +$9. The Bovada singles figures include the counting rule explained next. That’s why the stake needed is slightly higher than the rollover.
Measured as a share of the headline, Bovada’s crypto offer keeps 44% of its face value, the standard one 29%, and MyBookie’s just 9%. That last one is a lot of betting for a very thin edge. $20,000 of action to net about $91, and one bad run can take the deposit before you get there.
Four Terms That Change the Maths
1. Deposit + bonus, or bonus only
The base matters more than the multiple. Bovada’s own terms say the rollover applies “on both the initial deposit and the bonus amount”, so a $500 deposit with a $250 bonus means $3,750 of action, not $1,250. MyBookie works the same way: its rules page walks through a $100 deposit plus $50 bonus at 10x as $1,500. If an offer doesn’t state its base, assume deposit + bonus until you’ve read otherwise.
2. Favourites count for less
This one almost nobody explains. At Bovada, a winning bet counts toward rollover at the lesser of your risk or your win; a losing bet counts at your risk. Bet $200 on a -200 favourite, win, and only $100 goes toward clearing. Heavy favourites feel like the safe way to grind a bonus, and they’re the slowest. Around even money the effect is small. At -110 it adds about 5% to the stake you need, which is already in the table.
3. Parlays multiply the margin
Every leg of a parlay carries the book’s margin, and the margins compound. At -110 per leg, the expected loss is 8.9% on a two-leg parlay, 13.0% on three legs, 17.0% on four and 20.8% on five, against 4.55% on a single. A winning parlay counts in full toward rollover because the win is larger than the stake. So a parlay clears rollover dollar for dollar, while losing nearly three times as much per dollar along the way. That’s why every row in the table flips sign.
Some offers require parlays. Our Mostbet review documents a sports welcome that clears only on accumulators of three or more legs at odds of 1.40 or longer. That condition forces the expensive bet type. We don’t have a measured margin for Mostbet’s prices or a stated base for its 5x, so we won’t put a dollar value on it. But the mechanism is the one above: at -110-equivalent prices, every dollar pushed through a three-leg accumulator costs nearly three times what it costs on a single (13.0% against 4.55%).
4. Withdraw early and you lose all of it
Bovada’s terms are blunt: withdraw before the rollover is met and you forfeit the bonus funds “AS WELL as any money earned by wagering the bonus”. And on its crypto offer, only activity after you redeem the code counts toward clearing. A bonus is a commitment to a volume of betting. If you might want your money back next week, don’t take one.
Free Bets: Why a $100 Free Bet Isn’t Worth $100
A free bet returns only the profit if it wins, never the stake. A $100 free bet at +200 pays $200, not the $300 a cash bet would return. So its value depends on the odds you use it on. Assuming the same ~4.5% margin as a -110 line:
| Used at | Expected value of a $100 free bet |
|---|---|
| -110 | about $45 |
| +100 (even money) | about $48 |
| +200 | about $64 |
| +400 | about $76 |
Longer odds keep more of the value because the stake you don’t get back is a smaller share of the payout. They also mean you’ll usually lose the free bet: at +400 it lands roughly one time in five. And longshot markets often carry a bigger margin than the 4.5% we’ve assumed, which pulls these figures down. As a rule of thumb, a free bet is worth roughly half its face value on a coin-flip line, and more on a plus-money line if you accept the variance.
Compare that with the cash matches above: Bovada’s crypto offer keeps 44% of its face value. A free bet used sensibly can keep more, and it doesn’t lock your deposit behind a rollover.
Offers We Left Out, and Why
Checking our own pages against each other before publishing, we found that they disagree about the current sports welcome at BetOnline, SportsBetting.ag and BetUS. For BetOnline, one of our pages describes a free bet and another a matched deposit with a 10x rollover and a -200 minimum price. SportsBetting.ag appears as two different matches on two different pages, and BetUS with two different rollovers. Those sites also blocked our attempt to check their terms directly on the day we built this page.
We could pick the figure that makes the neatest table. We’re not going to. Those three stay out until we’ve confirmed their current terms at the source, and our reviews will be corrected at the same time. 1win is out for a simpler reason: we haven’t documented a sports welcome for it at all.
How to Take a Sports Bonus Without Getting Taken
- Find the base (deposit + bonus or bonus only) before you look at the headline. It can triple the requirement.
- Clear it with singles near even money, not parlays and not heavy favourites.
- Size the bonus to your normal betting. If you wouldn’t bet $20,000 over the promo window anyway, a bonus that needs $20,000 of action changes how you bet, and that’s the real cost.
- Don’t take it if you might withdraw early. Forfeiture takes the winnings as well as the bonus.
- A clean withdrawal is worth something too. An account with no bonus has nothing standing between you and the cashier. See how that plays out book by book in sportsbook withdrawal limits compared.
The Monkey’s Take
This is the one corner of gambling promotions where the numbers can genuinely favour you. That’s a low multiple on a low-margin bet, cleared patiently with singles. Bovada’s crypto sports welcome is the best example we’ve verified. But the same offer becomes a loss the moment you start stacking parlays to get through it faster, and the books know which one most people do. None of this is a reason to bet more than you would anyway. A bonus only has value if the betting it requires is betting you’d have done regardless.
The bonus isn’t the prize. The bet type you clear it with is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a sports betting bonus worth taking?
It can be, if you clear it with single bets near even money. At standard -110 odds, Bovada's 75% up to 750 dollar crypto sports welcome is worth about 333 dollars net, its 250 dollar standard offer about 71 dollars, and MyBookie's 1,000 dollar welcome about 91 dollars. Cleared with three-leg parlays, all three turn negative. These are expected values for a bettor with no edge, not guarantees.
How do you calculate the real value of a sportsbook bonus?
Expected cost equals the amount you must bet multiplied by the book's margin, and net value is the bonus minus that cost. On a -110 line the margin is about 4.55 percent of what you stake. The amount you must bet is the rollover multiple times its base, which is usually deposit plus bonus.
Why do parlays make a bonus worse?
Each leg carries the book's margin and the margins compound. At -110 per leg the expected loss is about 8.9 percent on two legs, 13 percent on three and 17 percent on four, against 4.55 percent on a single bet. A bonus cleared with parlays loses nearly three times as much per dollar of rollover.
What is a free bet actually worth?
A free bet pays only the profit, never the stake. Assuming a margin like a -110 line, a 100 dollar free bet is worth about 45 dollars at -110, about 64 dollars at +200 and about 76 dollars at +400. Longer odds keep more value but lose more often.
Does betting on favourites help clear a rollover?
Not at Bovada. Its terms count a winning bet at the lesser of your risk or your win, so a winning 200 dollar bet at -200 credits only 100 dollars toward the rollover. Heavy favourites are the slowest way to clear a bonus there.
What happens if I withdraw before clearing the rollover?
At Bovada you forfeit the bonus and any money won with it. Check the forfeiture rule before claiming any offer, and skip the bonus if you may need to withdraw early.
